The Spirits of Houston Texas

The Spirits of Houston, Texas
Exhibition Dancers

The Spirits of Houston, Texas were organized in 1975 by Lee and Lettie Reed to promote square dancing to the non-dancing public. The group consists of forty adult dancers. The Spirits meet once a week to practice and work on routines to be performed at various venues.

All music, routines, and costumes are developed especially for the Spirits. This unique and talented group performs dance routines consisting of mainstream, plus, and advanced square dance moves choreographed to provide a colorful and smooth style of dancing. Occasionally, some round dancing may be integrated into a performance.

The group has been featured at thirteen national square dnace conventions, numerous state, local, and international festivals. They have performed at The World's Fair. The Spirits had the distinction of joining twelve other countries as the American representatives to an International Folklore Festival in Saintes, France, for two weeks in July of 1991. In July of 1998, The Spirits represented the United States performing in Australia, first in Cairns (pronounced Cans) up near the Great Barrier Reef and then in Sydney, where they performed at Darling Harbour.

The purpose of the Spirits is to promote goodwill and square dancing by sharing fun and fellowship whereever they go.
